We spoke earlier with Kevin Mattson.
Kevin Mattson is Connor Study Professor of Contemporary History at Ohio University and serves as a faculty associate of the Contemporary History Institute. At Ohio University, he teaches courses that focus on 20th century American intellectual and political history.

Professor Mattson’s work focuses on the intersection between culture and politics in modern America. He is the author of seven books including, Upton Sinclair and the Other American Century (2006) and When American Was Great: The Fighting Faith of Postwar Liberalism (2004). His most recent work is a short history of the postwar conservative intellectual movement, entitled Rebels All!: A Short History of the Conservative Mind in Postwar America.

He is also the co-editor of Liberalism for a New Century, a book of essays by leading historians and public intellectuals that received mention in the New York Times and the Chronicle of Higher Education.
His writing about politics, culture, and history has appeared in a variety of publications, including The Nation, The American Prospect, Dissent, Commonweal, The Baffler, The Washington Post Book World, Academe, and other venues. He has also served as a commentator on National Public Radio (NPR), Nation Radio, PBS, German Television, and Fox News.
He is on the editorial board of Dissent magazine and works both nationally and locally with the American Association of University Professors (AAUP).

…“The results of a series of randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trials assessing the efficacy of inhaled marijuana consistently show that cannabis holds therapeutic value comparable to conventional medications, according to the findings of a 24-page report issued earlier today to the California state legislature by the California Center for Medicinal Cannabis Research (CMCR).
Four of the five placebo-controlled trials demonstrated that marijuana significantly alleviated neuropathy, a difficult to treat type of pain resulting from nerve damage.

Recessions bore through the American economy like monsoons, vaguely predictable (market bubbles always end in bursts), economically violent and messy in the aftemath and our current recession is no different EXCEPT this time the pain is profundly deep and being leveraged by those who have most profited to further weaken the system in their own self interest. Real conservationists and progressives have the opportunity to rebuild on a far better footing.

But with corporatists at the helm of a weak government, what can we do to rebuild our jobs and communities?

At 00:15 we share our earlier conversation with the inimitable Paul Krassner
Krassner calls himself an investigative satirist. Don Imus labeled him “one of the comic geniuses of the 20th century.” (Imus has since apologized for that quote.) And, according to the Los Angeles Reader, “Krassner delivers 90 minutes of the funniest, most intelligent social and political commentary in town.” On the other hand, a couple of FBI agents went to one of his performances and stated in their report, “He purported to be humorous about government policies.” His FBI files indicate that after Life magazine published a favorable profile of him, the FBI sent a poison-pen letter to the editor, complaining: “To classify Krassner as a social rebel is far too cute. He’s a nut, a raving, unconfined nut.”

“The FBI was right,” says George Carlin. “This man is dangerous–and funny; and necessary.”

ABC newscaster Harry Reasoner wrote in his memoirs, “Krassner not only attacks establishment values; he attacks decency in general.” So Krassner named his one-person show Attacking Decency in General,

Before obtaining a MS in Architecture from Illinois Institute of Technology as a student of architect Mies van der Rohe and planner Ludwig Hilberseimer, Seidel worked as a farmhand, factory worker, Alaska salmon fisherman, and carpenter. In 1957, while working in Chicago on the most environmentally damaging office and institutional buildings, he read a book entitled The Challenge of Man’s Future, by Harrison Brown. It described the dangers of excessive population growth, food and mineral shortages, and over consumption that threatened our future. ‎ It was clear his work bore a heavy impact on these problems, he changed direction and became a committed environmental architect planner. During this period, and after, he spent time teaching at five tuitions of higher learning including one in China and one in India. His work at the University of Michigan on directing urban expansion into a system of pedestrian oriented new towns led to his being hired as the master planner for an environmentally sound socially integrated community of 80,000 to be built outside of Cincinnati. When this failed to materialize, he took to developing, designing, and building eco-friendly, urban infill condominiums in Cincinnati.

--A deluge of emails after last week's interview with anti-gay Paul Cameron goes viral.
